Believe it or not, Freddy Krueger is at the center of a cancel-culture controversy on TikTok and X this Halloween!
The controversy started gaining attention in mid-October, and it’s largely about Freddy’s disturbing backstory.
🎃 Here’s What’s Happening
1. Freddy Krueger was added to Fortnite.
The horror icon appeared in Fortnite’s Halloween event, introducing him to a younger generation unfamiliar with the original Nightmare on Elm Street movies.
2. People discovered Freddy’s original backstory.
In the original 1984 movie, Freddy was a child murderer. However, director Wes Craven had originally envisioned him as a child molester, an element that was removed from the finished film.
The 2010 remake explicitly portrayed Freddy as a child sexual predator.
3. Some people are questioning whether Freddy should be celebrated.
The debate centers on whether a character with that history should be marketed through Halloween costumes, merchandise, and video games.
4. Horror fans are pushing back.
Many fans argue that Freddy is SUPPOSED to be evil. He’s a fictional horror villain, not somebody audiences are expected to admire.
Importantly, there appear to be more people complaining about Freddy being canceled than people actually demanding his cancellation.
