Kanye West is suing his record label, EMI. Contractually, he is not allowed to retire or take an extended hiatus– unless he is “actively pursuing his musical career.”
Kanye is suing the label to get out of the deal. According to California law, service contracts cannot last more than 7 years, but EMI has used various loopholes to extend the contract. Kanye has been with EMI since 2003.
It’s not often I’m on Kanye West’s side, but I am on this one. How burdensome to know there is NEVER an end in site– even for a paternity leave, illness, etc.
I hope he’s able to get out of this one. I wonder if he will continue with another label or just call it quits altogether and represent himself or something cuckoo like that. My vote is for the latter. -Taylor
