Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes dropped a bomb of a New York Times op-ed this morning. In the article Hughes says Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is ‘unprecedented and un-American,’ and federal regulators need to break up Facebook.
Hughes helped build Facebook from the ground-up with Zuckerberg, and was even his college roommate at Harvard. He left in 2007 to work with Barack Obama’s first presidential campaign and later liquidated his stock in Facebook.
Now he says he has ‘watched in horror as the company I helped create has grown into a behemoth that threatens to crush free speech and stifle competitive innovation.’
He also claimed that Zuckerberg has ‘unilateral control to monitor, organize and even censor the conversations of two billion people.’
So, what’s next? Should the government have some kind of jurisdiction over social media networks? Can the government even be involved? TBD. -Taylor
