I’m a big nerd about all things having to do with outer space, so when I read this, I had to share! Even if you’re not a space-nerd, this is still pretty crazy news:
Scientists have discovered our moon has been SHRINKING because its interior is cooling down. They are likening this to a grape as it dries up to form a raisin.
As the moon cools and gets smaller, the crust on the outside of the moon becomes brittle and little cliffs form– these breaks in the surface are being called “moonquakes.”
There’s all kinds of theories as to why the moon is shrinking, but the easiest one to understand (in my opinion) is that the Earth’s oceans are under additional tidal stress from the Earth’s gravitational pull. The oceans are stressed out from global warming and the like.
Whatever the case, the moon is definitely changing in a big (err, small?) way! -Taylor
