NBD, but I have a Boarding Pass to Mars.
What’s this about? Weeeeelll, it’s part of a public engagement campaign to highlight missions involved in NASA’s journey to Mars. Now until September 30, NASA is giving the public an opportunity to submit their name (stenciled on a chip) to Mars with the Mars 2020 rover.
The rover is scheduled to launch in July 2020, but it will take SEVEN MONTHS to land! Touch down is expected in February 2021.
NASA Spokesperson, Thomas Zurbuchen, said, “As we get ready to launch this historic Mars mission, we want everyone to share in this journey of exploration.”
It is free to submit your name, and with your submission, you receive a souvenir boarding pass (pictured above) and “frequent flyer” points. A laboratory in Pasadena, California, will stencil the names by using an electron beam on to a silicon chip. Lines of text will be smaller than one-thousandth the width of a human hair! At that size, more than a million names can be written on a single dime size chip. So far there are just over 2 million names that will make the trip. Crazy, right? -Taylor
