A dad’s Reddit rant is getting some reaction. In it he talks about refusing to give his 12-year-old son a ‘participation trophy,’ if you will, for coming in 5th place in a school spelling bee. The mom wanted to cheer the boy up by giving him a custom-made trophy. The engravement was going to read “Congratulations in the X middle school spelling bee 2021!” but no placement would’ve been mentioned.
Hey, 5th out of 28 isn’t bad. However the dad argued that if the kid wanted a trophy he needed to earn it by placing in the top three, not 5th. For the most part Reddit agreed.
The father did do an edit to the post saying while no trophy was given to boy, they did take him out to his favorite restaurant.
