Demi Lovato says that ending their relationship with Max Ehrich was the “best thing” to ever happen to them.
The 29-year-old singer, who broke off their two month-engagement to Ehrich in September 2020, told Kate Sosin of The 19th Represents Summit that things got serious with the actor In March 2020, just as they were “starting to identify as non-binary.”
Lovato told Sosin, that being in a straight relationship lead them “to ignoring all the parts of myself that I didn't think were digestible for my partner at the time.”
They explained, “In hindsight, the dissolvement of that relationship was actually probably the best thing that's happened to me, because of what that led inside of myself.”
The Camp Rock alum added that saying goodbye to that relationship allowed them to say goodbye to “everything that was holding me back from my most authentic self.”
However, Lovato says that they are “a very fluid person” who thinks their journey of self exploration could continue forever, noting that at some point in the future they may identify as trans or as a woman.
