Sinead O’Connor, the Irish artist best known for her 1990 hit “Nothing Compares 2 U”, has passed away at the age of 56. As first reported by The Irish Times, a statement from O’Connor’s family said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”

O’Connor’s success with the Prince-penned track led to her being named Rolling Stone’s 1991 artist of the year. 1991 was the same year that, despite being nominated for four Grammy Awards, O’Connor boycotted the ceremony, doubting the artistic merit of the event.

After ten albums, O’Connor retired from music in 2014. More recently, O’Connor has served as a mental health advocate while dealing with her own struggles, including substance abuse and the tragic death of her son in 2022.
