After last night’s big game, we ventured out into the internet in search of some trivia and interesting facts on Super Bowl 59.
Here’s what we came up with:
1. No one in the Super Bowl era had ever scored a touchdown on their BIRTHDAY, but it happened last night.
Eagles ROOKIE cornerback Cooper DeJean (pronounced “di-zheen”) turned 22 yesterday . . . and in the second quarter, he intercepted a Patrick Mahomes pass and ran it back 38 yards for a touchdown.
It was also his first career interception . . . and after the game, someone caught Cooper with a slice of cake.
2. There could’ve been TWO players who scored on their birthday. Eagles running back Saquon Barkley turned 28 yesterday. (Here are some fans singing “Happy Birthday” to him.)
He didn’t score a touchdown . . . but he did break Hall of Famer Terrell Davis’ record for most yards from scrimmage in a season (including the postseason).
Davis set his mark with 2,762 yards in 1998. That record stood for 26 years. Saquon broke the record on his first play of the game . . . and finished with a new mark of 2,857 yards from scrimmage.
3. Philly quarterback Jalen Hurts set a running record of his own. He carried the ball 11 times for 72 yards, which breaks the previous record for most running yards by a QB in the Super Bowl.
It was his OWN record. He previously set it two years ago in the Eagles’ loss to the Chiefs in Super Bowl 57. In that game, he had 70 yards.
4. Mahomes is 29, and it’s too early for Tom Brady comparisons, even after five Super Bowl appearances in six years, including three wins.
But consider this: Brady made 10 appearances in the Super Bowl . . . winning seven . . . and never lost a Super Bowl by more than one score.
5. Fans love rooting for their hometown team, but there was only ONE “hometown player” in the Super Bowl, who was actually BORN there. That’s Chiefs defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah, who was born in Kansas City.
Two other Chiefs players were born in the STATE of Kansas or Missouri . . . since the city straddles the state line. They are: Nose tackle Mike Pennel from Topeka and defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton from St. Louis.
Only one Eagles player is from Pennsylvania: Wide receiver Jahan Dotson, who went to high school in eastern Pennsylvania, and college at Penn State.
6. A lot of football fans were caught in the middle . . . and watched the Super Bowl without rooting for either team.
If you were LITERALLY and PHYSICALLY halfway between Kansas City and Philadelphia . . . you’d be in Dayton, Ohio.
