CWLP urges caution around community transformers: “Stay Clear of the Big Green Box”

By Trent R. Nelson Mar 30, 2025 | 8:01 PM

As the spring season gives way to outdoors projects, CWLP is reminding customers to stay clear from pad-mounted transformers, or the “big green box.” These ubiquitous installations, essential for electric service and reliability, are accompanied by sensitive, buried electrical conduit which may not be immediately obvious to anyone seeking to take a shovel to their yard nearby.

Blocking access to these transformers, like planting shrubs nearby, poses a safety hazard for utility crews, similar to obstructing fire hydrants. During power outages, CWLP crews will need quick access to unlock and open the cover of a transformer. Obstructions, including landscaping and plantings within the clearance area, will be removed to gain access, which could cause delays to restoring power quickly during emergency repairs.

Damage to an underground line or transformer equipment by planting near these can easily cause severe injury or death, on top of potentially knocking out power for the neighborhood and necessitating costly repairs.

For anyone considering landscaping near a transformer, CWLP offers a reminder to resist the temptation to “hide” the transformer and keep in mind these clearance and safety guidelines:

  • Always maintain a clearance of 8 feet in the front of the transformer (the side with the door) and 3 feet around all other sides.
  • Never dig beside a transformer or install fencing, storage buildings, or plantings near it that would inhibit utility crews’ access.
  • Plantings within the clearance area may be removed by utility personnel to gain access to electrical equipment.
  • Follow JULIE rules for safe digging by calling 811 two to 3 days prior to digging. https://safeelectricity.org/call-811-dig/
