The Animal Protective League of Springfield and Sangamon County has announced that applications are now open for its 2025 Junior Volunteer (JV) Program—designed for children ages 12–15 with a passion for animals who are eager to make a difference.
Running from Tuesday, June 24 to Friday, July 18, the Junior Volunteer Program offers a unique blend of hands-on experience with shelter animals, team-building activities, and humane education. The program kicks off with a celebratory cookout on Saturday, June 21, for all Junior Volunteers, their families, and APL staff, and concludes with a special Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, July 23.

Key Program Details:
● Open to youth who are 12–15 years old as of June 24, 2025 (those turning 16 during the program are still eligible).
● Runs two days per week, Tuesday through Friday, from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM.
● Includes two Saturday fundraisers; participants must attend at least one.
● A creative supporting project (artwork or essay) is required with the application.
● Participation is limited to 30–40 students due to space constraints—early application is strongly encouraged.
● Program cost is $95, which includes program materials and a t-shirt. Financial assistance is available upon request.
To apply, prospecctive volunteers must complete and submit the application by Wednesday, May 1, via email to volunteer@apl-shelter.org, or drop it off at the shelter located at 1001 Taintor Road, Springfield, IL, between 8:30–11:00 AM or 12:00–5:00 PM daily. Orientation for accepted applicants and a parent or guardian will be required, with multiple sessions offered.
Acceptance notices will be sent by May 15, 2025. Please note that submitting an application does not guarantee placement, as spots are filled in the order complete applications are received.
