SIU releases statement of support in wake of Monday’s YNOT tragedy in Chatham, announces grief counseling to be available through May 1

SIU released a statement on Tuesday afternoon stating that health care providers, faith leaders, and counselors were continuing to come together to support the Chatham community in the wake of the Monday, April 28, incident at YNOT Outdoors Summer and After School Camp that claimed the lives of four children.

They noted that grief counseling and trauma-informed support are set to be available at a series of evening sessions at Chatham Presbyterian Church, 1835 E Walnut St., from 5 to 7 p.m. on April 29, April 30, and May 1. Attendees may enter through the Chatham Community Food Pantry or Church Fellowship Hall entrances; additionally, licensed counselors, trauma-informed care professionals, and local pastors will be available for those in need of a safe space to process emotions, ask questions, or simply not be alone.

HSHS St. John’s HospitalSIU MedicineMemorial Health, Chatham Presbyterian Church, and other institutions are all aiding in this effort.

SIU Medicine Dean and Provost Jerry Kruse, MD, MSPH noted that:

“As a medical school and a community of healers, we stand ready to provide support, counseling, and care to all those affected. In this time of profound grief, we remain committed to offer compassion, comfort and resources to aid in healing the families, friends and Chatham community.”
