Lizzo is appealing a sexual harassment lawsuit filed against her, claiming it infringes on her free speech rights. Her attorneys are arguing that the lawsuit is “an attack on Lizzo’s First Amendment right to perform her music and advocate for body positivity.” The lawsuit, filed by former backup dancers in 2023, alleges sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment, which Lizzo denies. Despite parts of the lawsuit being dismissed previously, the judge allowed the rest of the case to continue, which includes claims alleging that Lizzo pressured her dancers into touching and engaging with nude performers in Amsterdam’s Red Light District. Lizzo’s attorneys insist that this trip was optional, while adding that “Lizzo held these outings as a necessary part of her creative process. Early social gatherings during international tours are critical to teambuilding and fostering cohesion.” Lizzo’s legal team is emphasizing the importance of not interfering with artists’ creative freedom, while the plaintiffs have not publicly addressed the appeal.
