Unemployment rates declined in all 12 Illinois metro areas for the year ending in May 2025, per USBLS and IDES

Unemployment rates declined in all 12 Illinois metro areas for the year ending in May 2025 – according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Illinois Department of Employment Security.

The total number of nonfarm jobs increased by about 300 over the year in Springfield, which was the 19th consecutive month of year-to-year job growth locally.

The Springfield area unemployment rate in May was 3.4%, down from 4% in May 2024.

The statewide jobless rate in May was 4.4%, down from 4.8%  a year earlier.
