Preparations continue for the demolition of buildings on the Pillsbury Mills site on Springfield’s northeast side.
Team Pillsbury said demolition is expected to begin in July with the exact sequence not yet determined, although the silos and headhouse will likely be the last structures to be torn down.
Demolition will be with a wrecking ball and hydraulic crushers. Organizers say a 300-thousand-pound crane was delivered to the site last week and will be assembled this week.
Contractors have removed about 90 percent of remaining asbestos, and about one-third of the silver paint on the silos has been removed with that project continuing through summer before they are demolished and their 70,000 pounds of concrete are recycled.
