Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski gathered local leaders and postal workers on Monday to discuss efforts to improve mail service in Central Illinois.
The Springfield Democrat said lagging delivery times in rural areas have resulted in delayed bills, paychecks, prescriptions and more.
Two letter carrier union leaders said the biggest issue is low staffing.
Budzinski said she wants the U.S. Postal Service to preserve distribution centers in Champaign and Springfield rather than exacerbate the delays by sending mail out of the area to be processed.
