YouTube is two decades old this year. It officially debuted in November of 2005, although a beta version went online the previous May.
These days it’s hard to imagine life without YouTube . . . even for people who lived an entire lifetime before it existed.
And here are 10 videos that helped put it on the map . . .
1. “Leeroy Jenkins” (2005): A bunch of guys playing World of Warcraft are discussing a battle plan, but Leeroy doesn’t feel like talking. Shouting his own name, he runs straight at the enemy, setting off an attack that kills all his friends.
2. “Chocolate Rain” (2007): Even if you’ve only heard it once, this song . . . particularly that voice . . . is seared permanently into your brain.
3. “Drinking Out of Cups” (2006): A talking Lizard with a New York accent . . . and an attitude to match.
4. “Charlie Bit My Finger” (2007): No explanation necessary.
5. “Charlie the Unicorn” (2008): Remember: Candy Mountain is a TRAP!
6. “Shoes” (2007): A goofy song about shopping for shoes. This actually won a People’s Choice Award for Best User Generated Video in 2008.
7. “Badgers: Animated Music Video” (2007): Just a minute of dancing badgers. With guest appearances from a mushroom and a snake.
8. “Keyboard Cat” (2007): This video was actually filmed in 1984, so it had to wait more than 20 years to reach its potential.
9. “My New Haircut” (2007): A pre-“Jersey Shore”parody of New York and New Jersey Italian broskis.
10. “Hide Yo Kids, Hide Yo Wife” (2010): Another one that needs no explanation.
(WARNING: You can watch all the videos here, but some of them contain PROFANITY.)
