Operators of the Viper Mine near Williamsville confirmed in a legal notice this week that it is permanently closing.
The mine was the main supplier of coal to Springfield public utility City Water, Light and Power until the city accepted a lower bid from other mine in November 2024.
The mine operated for more than 40 years. An executive of mine operator Knight Hawk Coal LLC told the State Journal-Register that underground portals at Viper Mine have been permanently sealed and reclamation has begun.
