As I reflect on my recent hospital stay, I’m reminded of the power of stillness and perspective. For nearly a week, I had to slow down and sit with my thoughts, a rare experience for someone who wears many hats – mom, wife, daughter, volunteer, and more. While much of that time was spent resting and recovering, it also gave me space to think about what truly matters.
One thing that rose to the top was my connection with our listeners and the Springfield community. I never thought I’d call Springfield home, but life had other plans. When my husband and I moved here at 23, it took time to settle in, but everything changed when we had children. We discovered the beauty of Washington Park, downtown businesses, and the abundance of free activities that make this community shine.
Now, as a part of this community, I’m grateful to connect with listeners daily and share positivity. My experience has taught me that variety is what makes Springfield special – it’s the people, the stories, and the experiences that make this place thrive.
The Importance of Community Involvement
Being an active member of the community has been a game-changer for my mental health. Volunteering, whether through school, church, or local organizations, provides a sense of value and purpose outside of work and home. It’s something to anchor on during life’s challenges, like a surgery or hospital stay.
If you’re looking to get involved, consider these options:
- School PTOs: Many schools have active parent-teacher organizations that welcome volunteers.
- Local Churches: Churches often have community programs and events that rely on volunteers.
- YMCA or Community Centers: These organizations offer various programs and services that benefit from volunteer support.
In the stillness of my hospital stay, I realized that community involvement isn’t just about giving back – it’s about finding value and purpose. If you’re looking for a way to boost your mental health and connect with others, I encourage you to explore volunteer opportunities in your area.
Let’s celebrate the variety that makes our community shine and support one another in our mental health journeys!!
