Members of the Springfield City Council on Tuesday pressed officials on low numbers of minority businesses and workers on city contracts.
Thirty percent of the city’s contract labor is now performed by minority workers, but Ward 2 Alderman Shawn Gregory noted that only a quarter of that workforce is local.
Springfield’s Director of Communications Ethan Posey noted that many contracts do not see enough offers to meet the city’s goal of 50 percent hiring. Posey said he believes that the city’s investment in business education programs will help to reach that number.
