Jury selection begins today in Peoria in the first-degree murder trial of former Sangamon County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Grayson for the July 2024 shooting death of Sonya Massey.
Grayson is charged with fatally shooting Massey in her home in unincorporated Springfield as he and another deputy answered a burglary call.
Grayson’s attorneys say he feared Massey would throw a pot of boiling water she was holding. Massey’s mental health and some of Grayson’s work history are expected to be brought up during the trial.
Defense attorneys were granted a motion to move the trial out of Sangamon County. The trial is expected to continue into next week.
