The City of Springfield has announced a program to improve response to opioid and mental health emergencies.
Mayor Misty Buscher said the Springfield BEACON Project is funded by the city’s share of the national settlement against opioid manufacturers.
BEACON stands for Bridging Emergency and Community Outreach Network. City fire, police and community relations departments will respond to opioid and mental health calls with the aid of an ambulance-style vehicle staffed by first responders and licensed clinical social workers.
Buscher said the BEACON Project will ensure that “when residents call for help, they’re met with compassion, expertise and pathways to recovery.”
