Testimony in First-Degree Murder Trial of Sean Grayson Underway

By Greg Halbleib Oct 23, 2025 | 5:26 AM

Testimony began on Wednesday in the first-degree murder trial of Sean Grayson. The former sheriff’s deputy is charged with fatally shooting Sonya Massey in her Springfield home in July 2024.

Deputy Dawson Farley testified that when he responded to a prowler call at Massey’s home that night with Grayson, Massey “never said or did anything that made (him) think she was a threat.”

Farley testified he clarified his report about how Massey lifted a pot of boiling water two weeks later after Grayson’s indictment on murder charges “to do right by Massey’s family.”

Unredacted video of the shooting from the deputies’ body camera was played for the jurors. Then-Chief Deputy Anthony Mayfield testified that he determined Grayson violated department policy on use of force, standard conduct, body cam activation and medical response.

Testimony continues today in Peoria.
