New leaders at the Illinois Federation of Teachers say Illinois needs to increase its spending on K-through-12 education, even if that means raising taxes on wealthy individuals and corporations.
Capitol News Illinois reports the union’s new president, Stacy Davis Gates, plans to urge state lawmakers to rethink the way the state funds public schools.
Currently, the state pays less than a third of the cost of funding public schools while the majority of funding comes from local property taxes. I-F-T leaders from throughout the state plan to be at the Capitol in Springfield on Wednesday for a statewide lobbying day.
