Jury deliberations in the Sean Grayson murder trial have paused for the day and are scheduled to resume Wednesday at 9 a.m.

Grayson is charged with the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey in her unincorporated Springfield home in July 2024. Grayson and a partner were answering a prowler call at Massey’s home on Hoover Avenue on the night she was shot.

The Peoria County jury deliberated for more than six hours on Tuesday before breaking for the day shortly after 6 p.m.

During closing arguments on Tuesday morning, Assistant State’s Attorney Mary Beth Rodgers said Grayson lied several times during his testimony, including that he was moving toward Massey to arrest her and that he had no choice but to draw his weapon.

Defense attorney Daniel Fultz argued that the case comes down to whether Grayson was justified in firing his weapon.
