Public transportation riders in Chicago will not see fare hikes or service cuts next year.
Capitol News Illinois reports the Regional Transportation Authority approved new 2026 budget estimates after state lawmakers passed legislation raising funding for public transportation.
Metra and the CTA had planned to raise fares in 2026 if state lawmakers did not pass a bill to address upcoming budget gaps.
New funding will come from an existing motor fuel sales tax, interest in the state Road Fund and a Chicago-area sales tax increase the RTA board is expected to approve next summer.
