Springfield City Council Approves Temporary Moratorium on Tiny Homes

By Greg Halbleib Nov 13, 2025 | 4:51 AM

The Springfield City Council Committee of the Whole on Wednesday night approved a temporary moratorium against the development of tiny homes in the Ward 2 area.

The decision comes after pushback to a recent private venture seeking to build a community center and housing for unhoused veterans in that area.

Nearby residents say they were misled about the nature of the project, and that they are concerned about mental health and safety regarding the tiny homes’ future residents.

Ward 2 Alderman Shawn Gregory argued that homeless resources should not be concentrated into the city’s poorest neighborhoods. Gregory advocated for the moratorium in order to give the city time to determine if there are possible alternative locations and improvements for the project.
