Michael Egan, retired Springfield Police Sergeant, has accepted a guilty plea for charges of driving under the influence and aggravated DUI in a September 5, 2024 crash which nearly killed two motorcyclists.
The case of Egan and how he was handled by SPD officers at the scene of the accident on Lakeshore Drive set off protests in Springfield, the culmination of a summer of outrage within the capital city following the murder of Sonya Massey. Crash victims Chelsey Farley and Trevor Hopkins left the hospital with long-term injuries after weeks of recovery.
Then-SPD Chief Ken Scarlette later told the City Council that the Illinois State Police determined through blood testing that Egan’s blood alcohol content was “more than double the legal limit” after the crash. Four officers who responded to Lakeshore Drive later received disciplinary action.
Egan now awaits sentencing on January 30, 2026, at 1:00 PM.
