Former Assistant U.S. Attorney in Springfield Joseph Hartzler Has Died

A Springfield attorney who was the lead prosecutor in the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing case has died.

Joseph Hartzler died on December 18 in Chicago. He was 75.

Hartzler was an assistant U.S. Attorney in Springfield when Attorney General Janet Reno selected him to lead the prosecution of Timothy McVeigh.

Hartzler served two terms on the Ball-Chatham school board, coached youth sports and taught Sunday school at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Springfield.

He is survived by his wife, Lisa; three sons; and six grandchildren.

His funeral is on Sunday in Chicago.
