District 186 Educators Discuss Specifics of Safe School for All Act

By Greg Halbleib Feb 3, 2026 | 5:17 AM

Educators in District 186 spoke at Monday’s Board of Education meeting to urge the Board to hasten the development of new gatekeeper protocols for interactions between immigration agents and school staff.

The Safe Schools For All Act went into effect in January, and requires that by July of 2026, all school districts in Illinois implement a written policy for reviewing and authorizing requests by law enforcement and federal immigration agents.

District teachers highlighted uncertainty about potential ICE raids as a driving force for anxiety among students.

Superintendent Jennifer Gill said the board is actively considering how to implement the act and expects to have a proposed policy to consider at its next meeting.
