When Service Sparks Joy: SHG Key Club Lights Up Our RYSE Afterschool Program

Every once in a while, a volunteer partnership comes along that doesn’t just work—it transforms everyone involved. That’s exactly what happened this fall when three SHG Key Club members walked through the doors of our RYSE Afterschool Program for the first time.

Let’s introduce the crew making big waves in a small amount of time:

  • Ella Shin — Senior, Key Club President
  • Natalie Zak — Senior, Vice President
  • Ethan Moore — Freshman and already stepping up big

From their very first visit with District 186’s unhoused students, something special clicked. After just a couple of sessions, the RYSE kids were buzzing—“When are they coming back?” became a daily question. And honestly? The enthusiasm was mutual.

.

Not long after, Ella sent a note sharing just how much the experience meant to her and the other members. She talked about how much they genuinely enjoyed connecting with the kids, and how it inspired them to do even more.

And they didn’t just say it, they showed it! Pics attached (and trust us, the smiles say it all).

Now, SHG Key Club sends at least five members every single week to help support, mentor, and spend time with our students. Ella is even working on a plan to bring the National Honor Society into the fold, multiplying the impact even further.

For a program that doesn’t always have an easy time finding volunteers, SHG Key Club has been nothing short of a blessing. They’ve shown consistency, energy, and heart that has helped us keep serving these incredible kids with the joy and support they deserve.

To Ella, Natalie, Ethan, and every SHG student stepping up to help—thank you. You’re not just volunteering your time; you’re building relationships, inspiring smiles, and reminding our students that they matter.
