Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene of a head-on collision involving a wrong-way vehicle on Interstate 55 near East Lake Shore Drive in Springfield early Monday morning.
Illinois State Police Troop 6 said the crash occurred at around 1 a.m. A passenger in one of the vehicles was taken to an area hospital with unspecified injuries.
The drivers’ names have not been released.
Southbound Interstate 55 was closed for about five hours due to the crash.
