Springfield City Council Advance Ordinance for New Armored Security Vehicle for SPD

The Springfield City Council on Tuesday advanced an ordinance to purchase a new Lenco BearCat armored security vehicle for the Springfield Police Department.

Since the $500,000 purchase authorization had its first reading last week, SPD leaders have maintained the purchase is essential for officer and public safety.

During Tuesday’s Committee of the Whole meeting of the council, Alderman Roy Williams Jr. continued to press Police Chief Joe Behl to consider ways to save money.

The new armored vehicle would replace a 20-year-old model that Behl said has developed many problems.
