Sangamon County Sheriff Paula Crouch turned back a primary election challenge from former deputy David Timm on Tuesday.
Crouch was appointed sheriff 18 months ago and defeated Timm in a Republican primary with 54 percent of the vote, 9,256 to 7,289.
Crouch said she remained focused in her first political campaign on discussing improvements in the department since she took office.
Timm said he was gratified by the support he received in his first political campaign.
Marc Bell was the only Democrat to file for the race but he withdrew in the weeks before the election. Democrats will be allowed to slate a candidate to face Crouch in November.
