Springfield Fire Department Responds to Fire in Target Parking Lot

By Mike Wennmacher Mar 20, 2026 | 12:48 PM

Springfield Firefighters responded to a fire in the parking lot of the Target on Springfield’s west side on Friday morning.

The driver of a garbage truck said he was making routine pickups and had just closed the compactor when he heard an odd sound and saw bright orange flames coming from the back of the truck.

He attempted to put out the fire with a hand extinguisher, but was unsuccessful.

The fire department was then called, and the driver dumped the truck’s load into the Target parking lot.

Fire crews deployed water cannons to bring the blaze under control.
