Homeowners and Auto Insurance Bill Advances in Illinois General Assembly

A bill that would give the state more authority to regulate homeowners and automobile insurance is advancing in the General Assembly.

Capitol News Illinois reports the bill passed the House last week and now only needs an up-or-down vote in the Senate before being sent to Governor JB Pritzker.

The governor first called for regulating homeowners insurance rates last summer after State Farm Insurance announced a 27 percent rate hike in Illinois.

Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias has also been urging lawmakers to pass tighter controls over auto insurance rates.

Insurance industry lobby groups oppose the bill, arguing it will result in higher premiums and less competition in the insurance market.
