The January unemployment rate in the Springfield area was 5.3 percent, seven-tenths of a percentage point higher than one year ago according to a report released on Thursday by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Illinois Department of Employment Security.
The statewide jobless rate for January was 5.4 percent, up from 5 percent in January 2025.
The agencies reported more than 105,000 nonfarm jobs in the Springfield area in January, which is 21-hundred lower than one year earlier.
