Springfield residents woke up Thursday morning to find significant storm damage at the Animal Protective League (APL) following severe overnight weather. Despite the destruction, officials confirmed that no animals or staff members were injured—an outcome many are calling a relief amid the aftermath. Two of the buildings have been totaled, their roofs gone and swept over the fields behind the shelter.

While volunteers and APL leadership have begun assessing the situation, the full extent of the damage is still unknown.
Executive Director Deana Corbin said it may take time to determine exactly what repairs and supplies will be needed in the coming days. Please keep a close eye to their Facebook page and their outreach on media for more information.

For those eager to support, Corbin emphasized that financial contributions are the most effective way to help right now. Donations can be made directly through the organization’s website: https://animalprotectiveleague.harnessgiving.org/donate/

Beyond monetary assistance, the shelter is also in urgent need of foster homes. Although many community members quickly responded to help Thursday morning, several cats still require temporary placement as the facility works through cleanup and recovery efforts.

The storm’s impact has also knocked out power at the shelter, leaving phone lines down and limiting direct contact. APL officials are asking anyone seeking updates or ways to help to reach out through their Facebook page, where information is being shared as it becomes available.

As recovery continues, community support remains a critical piece of helping the Animal Protective League get back on its feet. Here at WNNS we support the APL every week and we hope to see our community step up as we know they always do!
