Lead contamination was confirmed in soil in a section of a Taylorville park according to a report released Tuesday by the Illinois Department of Public Health.
The study showed elevated lead levels in one of the baseball fields and near the dining hall at Manners Park. Taylorville Park District officials closed those sections of the park in 2024.
The IDPH study said the source of the metals is not known, but is not related to the Ameren CIPS Superfund cleanup site immediately west of the park on Taylorville’s south side.
The report’s released begins a 30-day comment period through September. Comments may be made at the IDPH website or at a public open house on September 22nd at the University of Illinois Extension service office in Taylorville.
