At last night’s Golden Globes, Eddie Murphy received the Cecil B. DeMille Award . . . which is basically a lifetime achievement thing. And he created the night’s biggest viral moment during his acceptance speech.
He said, quote, “I want to let you know that there is a definitive blueprint that you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, longevity and peace of mind. It’s a blueprint, and I’ve followed it my whole career.
“It’s very simple, just do these three things: pay your taxes, mind your business and keep Will Smith’s wife’s name out your [effing] mouth!” (Here’s a censored version.)
It was also a good night for “Everything Everywhere All at Once”. Ke Huy Quan won Best Supporting Actor, and in a very emotional speech, he thanked Steven Spielberg for giving him his first job.
His co-star Michelle Yeoh won her first Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, and the producers made the mistake of starting the play-off music to make her end her speech.
She said, quote, “Shut up, please. I can beat you up, okay? And that’s serious.”
(Here’s video. And here’s her full speech. It’s true, you know. Michelle was a legit action / martial arts star in her day.)
A lot of people reported that the woman playing piano onstage tried to play her off. But it wasn’t her. The play-offs were pre-recorded music.
Host Jerrod Carmichael didn’t pull any punches in his opening monologue. He said right off the bat that he only got the gig because he’s black. He added, quote, “I’m not saying [the Hollywood Foreign Press Association is] a racist organization, but it didn’t have a single Black member until George Floyd died.” (Here’s his speech.)
Jennifer Coolidge won Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series for “The White Lotus”, and was her typical, hilarious self. She also made the show’s creator, Mike White, cry.
(PROFANITY WARNING: The clip is uncensored. Jennifer also had everyone cracking up when she presented an award earlier in the night.)
As you know, the Globes is one of those award shows where the celebrities get their drink on.
And it seemed like presenter Regina Hall was in the bag. She called herself Brad Pitt’s wife, and then laughed about Kevin Costner not being able to be there to accept his award.
When “The White Lotus” won Best Miniseries or TV Movie, Mike White fully admitted he was hammered.
