Summer Fun Events Fall Victim to COVID-19 Concerns

The COVID-19 pandemic is claiming more summer fun activities in our area. Following a discussion between board members and local health department, this year’s Vermilion County Fair and Expo has been cancelled. The fair was scheduled for June 24-28th, 2020, at the fairgrounds west of Danville.

”Our number one priority is keeping all of our fairgoers safe, and at this time we just don’t know how we could do that,” said Rick White, Vermilion County Fair and Expo President, said in a news release. He added they hope to reschedule the Queen Pageant at a later date. And White added the fair board is also working on providing some socially distant entertainment this summer.

”This is not a decision we wanted to make, but one we had to make, so that when we all can be together again everyone is there,” White added in his statement.

The cancellation of the Vermilion County Fair and Expo was the latest to be added to a growing list of summer events in our area that will not occur this year due to the COVID-19 threat. Summer camps at Camp Drake near Oakwood, the Quaker Oats Breakfast in the Park, Danville’s Community Day, and this year’s Arts in the Park in Danville are some of the other events cancelled this summer. And earlier cancellations included Balloons Over Vermilion and the NJCAA Division II Men’s National Basketball Tournament, along with AMBUCS Challenger Baseball. But in each case, those involved in the events have all proclaimed they will be back next year.
