In case you couldn’t tell, Ariana Grande was majorly inspired by the “Sound of Music” song “My Favorite Things” when she wrote “7 Rings.” She was SO inspired by the song, she had to cough up 90% of the songwriting credit to get the go-ahead!
Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein (the famous duo known as “Rodgers & Hammerstein”) wrote “My Favorite Things” back in the late 1950’s. So, Ariana’s representatives and label had to bring the song to the company that controls Rodgers & Hammerstein’s catalog. The company ended up requesting a 90% cut of the royalties, and Ariana’s camp ACCEPTED! Likely because they knew they’d never get the green light otherwise.
