The Springfield City Council on Tuesday night voted to create new grants for two tax increment financing programs totaling $1.2 million toward business and property revitalization on the city’s east side. The proposal had met with some resistance in committee, but was approved 9-1 on Tuesday night.

Alderman Brad Carlson cast the only vote against the plan, saying he was concerned about tying up funds for future projects.

While Alderman Shawn Gregory hopes the new TIF grants will revitalize the troubled east side of town, Tuesday’s ordinances reduce barriers to funding for home repairs and other community improvements.
