Several events are commemorating the one-year anniversary of the fatal shooting of Sonya Massey in her home in the unincorporated Cabbage Patch neighborhood near Springfield.

Former Sangamon County sheriff’s deputy Sean Grayson is charged with first-degree murder in her July 6, 2024 death with his trial scheduled for this October in Peoria.

Activities honoring Massey on Sunday included a balloon launch near her Hoover Avenue home and dedication of the pedestrian bridge over Clear Lake Avenue as the Massey Memorial Bridge.

Healing circles are planned for today from 3:30 to 5:30 and from 5:30 to 7:30 at Thrive Center for Wellness at 435 West Washington Street. Thursday’s Levitt AMP Springfield downtown concert will be dedicated to Massey. The Massey Commission encourages residents to wear purple and plant a purple flower during July.
