Lawsuit Accuses Illinois of Failing to Maintain List of Registered Voters

The U.S. Justice Department is supporting a federal lawsuit in Illinois that accuses the state of failing to properly maintain a statewide list of registered voters.
Capitol News Illinois reports attorneys for the D-O-J’s Civil Rights Division say the agency agrees that Illinois is not meeting its duties under the National Voter Registration Act.
The suit was originally filed last year by the conservative group Judicial Watch. It argues that the State Board of Elections is failing to make sure that voters’ names are removed from the rolls when they die or move to another jurisdiction. Illinois argues that state law puts local election authorities in charge of maintaining voter rolls.
The case is currently scheduled to be decided at a hearing on July 30th.
