Governor JB Pritzker says Democratic lawmakers from Texas sheltering in Illinois have nothing to fear from the FBI because they are not violating federal laws.
Capitol News Illinois reports Pritzker made that comment on Thursday after Republican Texas Senator John Cornyn said the FBI agreed to help locate the lawmakers. The Democrats fled to Illinois on Sunday so the Texas House would not be able to vote on a Republican-backed congressional redistricting plan.
States normally draw new congressional maps only every 10 years following each census. But President Donald Trump is urging Texas to draw new maps this year to help the G-O-P keep its narrow majority in the U-S House.
Pritzker said if Texas Republicans follow through with their plan, Democratic states like Illinois could retaliate by redrawing their own congressional maps.
