GOP Lawsuit Against State Budget Bills Dismissed

By Mike Wennmacher Aug 15, 2025 | 1:45 PM

A Sangamon County Judged has dismissed a lawsuit by the state GOP that had challenged the State’s Budget Bills.

Members of the State GOP had argued that the budget bill, the budget implementation bill and the revenue omnibus bill violated the three-readings rule in the Illinois Constitution.

In the opinion explaining why the case had been dismissed the judge cited that that the three readings rule in the Constitution does not mandate that bills must have the same name throughout the process or that the three readings process must start over whenever a bill is amended.
