When it comes to my family, we love the Halloween holiday. Every year we decorate at the beginning of October and our Halloween decor collection just keeps growing. After the holiday is over, we always scour the clearance racks for our costumes for the next year and have amassed a pretty solid collection for our household, for Halloween or otherwise.
However, this year both my kids picked costumes that weren’t a part of the collection we already had, so we’re having to throw it back to the 90s and create our own Halloween costumes from scratch.
Here’s some tips for making a homemade costume that I’ve picked up in the past two weeks:
-
Raid the closets or closets of friends and families. Know someone who has a kid who dressed up as someone similar last year? See if they still have the pieces around to borrow!
-
Start with what you have – look through your own closet and art supplies and see if you have the starts of items you need, like blank t-shirts, fabric markers, craft foam, or headbands for the beginning of headpieces.
-
Check thrift stores – Once Upon A Child may have just the items you need for those homemade costumes!
-
Look for inspiration online – chances are, another parent or caregiver out there has done something similar in the past few years and may have some good tips on how to DIY the costume you are aiming for.
-
Keep it simple! Remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect or stage quality. The whole point is for the kids to have fun on Halloween, not win awards. As long as there is candy involved, the holiday will be great!
