We all know that the winter season brings more time indoors and less time outside, but it also brings the dreaded sicknesses of the season; including RSV, flu, colds, and more. While I’d take any upper respiratory infection over a bout of the stomach flu, it’s still no fun to be restricted to the house and not able to participate in all the holiday festivities.
This year, my family was not spared from the wintertime ick, in fact, influenza A took us all down in the week before Christmas break. With kids off of school and the time we parents had to take off of work, we’re trying to make the best of it.
The holiday season can be a real bummer when you’re feeling under the weather. Here are 5 tips to help you beat the sickness blues:
1. Prioritize Rest
When you’re feeling crummy, it’s tempting to push through and try to keep up with holiday plans. But trust us, your body will thank you for taking a break. Give yourself permission to curl up on the couch, grab a box of tissues, and snuggle the day away.
2. Stay Hydrated (and Warm)
Drink plenty of fluids, like tea, soup, or warm broth, to help loosen up congestion and soothe a sore throat. Avoid caffeinated drinks that can dehydrate you further. And, let’s be honest, a warm cup of soup can be super comforting when you’re feeling down.
3. Get Some Fresh Air
When you’re stuck inside with a sick ick, it’s easy to feel cooped up and claustrophobic. Open a window, take a quick walk outside (even if it’s just around the block), or sit by a sunny window to get some fresh air and vitamin D.
4. Practice Self-Care
When you’re feeling under the weather, it’s the perfect time to indulge in some serious self-care. Take a relaxing bath, listen to soothing music (can I suggest 98.7 WNNS), or try some gentle stretches. You can even have a movie marathon or read a good book – whatever helps you unwind and feel better.
5. Let Others Help
Don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Let friends and family know you’re feeling under the weather, and see if they can lend a hand with holiday tasks or errands. Having a support system can make a big difference when you’re not feeling your best.
Hope these tips help you and me feel better soon!
