Authorities in Logan and McLean counties said a man from Iowa died while in police custody shortly after a pursuit late Sunday night.
The Logan County coroner said 66-year-old Richard Saunders of Guttenberg, Iowa was pronounced dead at about 12:30 am at Lincoln Memorial Hospital.
Illinois State Police pursued a vehicle wanted for aggravated battery to a police officer in LeRoy.
The vehicle stopped on Route 54 in Logan County.
Police said Saunders suffered a possible medical emergency after being taken into custody.
He was taken by ambulance to Lincoln Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
